The Zero Back Injury System (ZBI)

WHAT IS Medcare's Injury Prevention System?

The Zero Back Injury System, otherwise known as ZBI, was created to assist facilities in implementing and promoting no-lift policies in long-term-care facilities and hospitals, thus creating safer work environments for caregivers/staff as well as safer living conditions for patients.

ZBI REDUCES COSTS THAT COUNT

The ZBI System focuses on the areas that need the most attention. ZBI will reduce direct costs such as compensation payments and medical expenses. ZBI also reduces indirect costs such as patient injuries, incontinence pad usage and skin tears. Other indirect costs that ZBI helps to control include: staff turnover, administrative costs related to injuries and staff replacement. These costs often far exceed the direct costs. Controlling these costs is extremely important in providing a safe environment for staff and quality care for the patients.

CASE STUDY

The graphs and table below illustrate what is happening at many facilities. The data below is specific to one healthcare system's upward trend of costs associated with worker injuries. Then shows the benefits after they implemented a limited lift policy. Note: All data was provided by facilityand not Medcare.

NEEDS ASSESSMENT

Gaining an understanding of a facility’s environment is essential to designing a No-Lift solution that will succeed. We perform a comprehensive 5 step on-site assessment of your facility.

OUR ASSESSMENT WILL

  • examine the physical characteristics of your facility
  • understand the special needs of your patients
  • review your lift/transfer policies and procedures
  • analyze your insurance loss runs and medical claims
  • recommend appropriate type and amount of equipment needed to meet facility goals

GOAL SETTING

We will help you set specific goals you want to achieve with your No-Lift solution. Whether your goals are reducing transfer related costs and injuries, improving patient care or creating a better working environment, we will help you to articulate your goals and set measures to document the progress in achieving these goals.

QUALITY EQUIPMENT

Durable and reliable lifting equipment is the cornerstone of your No-Lift solution. Only reliable equipment can deliver a reliable solution. With the highest production standards, the most comprehensive warranty in the industry and a 24-hour parts guarantee, your Medcare equipment will be there when you need it.

EQUIPMENT ALONE IS NOT ENOUGH

Many facilities have purchased equipment but continue to experience a high rate of back injuries related to patient transfers. Quality equipment combined with a system committed to training policies, awareness of risks and accountability is the only proven formula to guarantee a reduction in transfer related injuries.

ZBI IS COMMITTED TO TRAINING

The training that ZBI provides is essential to reducing injuries. Once the equipment is in place, we are physically present to train your staff on proper lifting, transferring and positioning techniques and establish policies to make sure that these techniques are followed.

In order to accommodate new users and retrain existing users, Medcare has developed the only interactive CD-Rom training tool in the industry, Evidence of Learning. This training device assures that all users have the knowledge and skill to operate lifting equipment before they actually transfer residents.

MANAGEMENT SUPPORT

The most important step in implementing a No-Lift solution is that management supports and promotes the policy. We will assist you in educating your staff on the importance and benefits of a No-Lift solution. We will also help you implement accountability measures and reward systems to insure success in achieving the established goals.
